What Inspires Me

I love helping people, whether its something as big as dealing with the loss of a parent or as small as mowing their backyard.  I love people, and it makes me feel good to know that I have made a difference in someone else's life.

This is the story of when I first truly discovered this love of helping others:

Before I became sick, I was working as the sales and marketing manager for a staffing agency.  It was a small office, so when I wasn't on the road seeing clients I helped out with interviewing potential employees.  One day a guy named Ronald came in.  He didn't have much experience for any of the jobs that we were looking to fill, but he seemed like a smart, motivated guy, so we kept his resume close by.  It took us about two months before we could finally place him somewhere that actually worked out, and even then it was simply because he kept calling us and coming by, so he was the first person on our minds when a job would come up.

About two months later Ronald came into the office again, and this time he was ecstatic.  He kept thanking us over and over again; he wouldn't stop.  Finally we got him calmed down enough to tell us what was going on.  He explained that the group of people he normally hung out with had robbed a convenience store the night before and had all been arrested.  Most of them had drugs on them, so they had that charge, as well.  Ronald said that before he got this job he hung out with them every night, and he had gone along on robberies before.  He said that the job that we worked so hard to find him was the reason that he didn't get arrested the night before, and he called his boss to make sure that it was okay to come in and thank us personally.  If we had not found that job for him, he would have been put in jail for a very, very long time, and his children would have grown up without their father.  He had changed his entire life because he loved his job.

Seeing how happy he was and that we had actually made a true difference in this guy's life had a profound affect on me.

I last saw Ronald again just after Christmas in 2012, and he was still with the company with which we had placed him in 2006.  I had no idea who Ronald was before this experience, but I know that I will never forget him.
